In a world as fickle as the club scene, 11 years is an eternity - so running a successful weekly night for this long is one hell of an achievement whichever way you look at it.
When Phil Morse and Terry Pointon started Tangled in the halcyon days of 1993, Madchester baggy still ruled the roost across the city's nightspots. But changes were most definitely afoot. House music - until then a secret of the underground - was going mainstream and these two promoters were among those who reaped the rewards. Perfect timing, passion and endless hard work ensured their night quickly became the stuff of legend, with clubbers from all over the country travelling for their weekly fix.
After a hectic four years which took in six different venues, Tangled put its roots down at the Phoenix - where it remains to this day - and added a second room dedicated to breaks and presided over by the highly talented DJ Steve Thorpe.
Spend a Saturday night deep in the bowels of the Oxford Road Precinct Centre and you'll hear a range of cutting-edge electronic music, with each night peaked by the much-loved residents/promoters. And more than any other night in town, here you'll meet every tribe of 21st century British yoof - ravers, crusties, trendies, students and scallies - dancing together in one friendly, sweaty mass. It's a heart-warming sight, and one rarely eclipsed in this neck of the woods.
"We're really pleased to be going so strong after such a good run," grins Phil, pointing out that Tangled is now the longest-running Saturday nighter in town. "When we started out we had no idea things would go so well - we had no real plan then and we still don't. Running a club night this long is kind of uncharted territory, simply because not many promoters have been about for such a long time.
"We just seem to have struck some kind of chord with Tangled. We've got a membership list of something like 7,000 people yet we're able to keep it nice and personal. We know quite a few people's names and still see a few who were coming back in the early days.
"But to tell you the truth, we're as surprised as anyone that we're still here after all this time."
Guests this Saturday are up-and-coming trance stars Above and Beyond, plus the godfather of UK breakbeat, Rennie Pilgrem.
